We are looking for an experienced and commercially minded Senior Legal Counsel to join our ANZ team in Sydney.
This is a high-impact role where you will act as a trusted legal advisor to the business, influencing decisions across the full product lifecycle.
About the Role
As Senior Legal Counsel , you will provide end-to-end legal and compliance support across a dynamic FMCG business.
You will partner closely with cross-functional teams: Marketing, Sales, Procurement, Regulatory Affairs, and Global Legal, ensuring business initiatives are both commercially driven and legally sound .
Operating at the intersection of law, strategy, and business execution , you will play a key role in enabling growth and innovation while protecting Danone’s reputation.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Legal Advisory
Provide pragmatic, risk-based legal advice
Translate complex legal matters into clear, actionable guidance
Act as a trusted advisor to a variety of stakeholders across ANZ
Commercial & Contracting Excellence
Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements (sales, supply and procurement )
Support sales and distribution models, retailer agreements, and tenders
Enable business growth through proactive legal support
Marketing, Brand & Regulatory Support
Advise on advertising, product claims, promotions, and digital marketing
Support brand protection, IP matters, and competitive positioning
Ensure compliance within a regulated FMCG and healthcare environment
Risk & Compliance Management
Identify, assess, and mitigate legal and compliance risks
Support and oversee implementation of Danone’s compliance framework
Advice on anti-bribery/anti-corruption laws, anti-trust, data privacy law, and international trade sanctions
Governance & Emerging Risk Areas
Act as Company Secretary Provide guidance on Environmental, Sustainability and Governance obligations
Proactively identify and advise on emerging risks, including cybersecurity and digital compliance
Leadership & Capability Building
Lead and mentor a Compliance Advisor, who will directly report to you
Build legal and compliance capability across the organisation
Foster a culture of integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement
About You
Who You Are
You are a commercially astute and pragmatic legal professional who thrives in a fast-paced, regulated environment and enjoys working closely with the business to enable growth while managing risk effectively.
You bring:
Minimum 8+ years Post Admission Experience (PAE)
A qualified lawyer with a current Australian practising certificate
Currently working as a Senior Legal Counsel, Associate/Deputy General Counsel , Corporate Counsel or a highly experienced Legal Counsel ready to step up
Strong experience in commercial law within FMCG, healthcare, or other regulated industries
Proven experience managing or mentoring junior talent (e.g. paralegal or junior lawyer)
Strong expertise in at least three or more of the following areas :
Intellectual Property (IP)
Data Privacy & Cyber Risk
Competition & Consumer Law
Commercial Contracts
Company Secretarial work
Demonstrated ability to provide clear, pragmatic, and risk-based legal advice across complex, cross-functional matters
Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and communicate effectively with non-legal teams
A proactive, adaptable mindset with the confidence to operate autonomously across a broad legal remit
Ability to identify and execute opportunities to automate, digitise and create efficiencies in ways of working and process.
