Le poste en détail
🚀 Be part of a movement to change the way Europe pays
In today’s digital Europe, payments still feel too complicated. Random delays, confusing rules, extra apps and accounts make it harder than it should be to pay and get paid.
The European Payments Initiative is changing that with Wero, a proudly European digital wallet to make payments easier, clearer and more secure. Online, in store, at home and across borders, with your money and data protected under European laws and regulations.
Wero is live in Belgium, France and Germany and launching very soon in Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Backed by 16 major banks and the two largest European acquirers, we’re building a brand new, proudly European payment system. Why not join us?
🔎 What's in it for you
Build reliable, scalable payment services that make disputes simpler for customers and partners.
Work on meaningful problems at the heart of a pan-European payment system, with a direct impact on product quality and user trust.
Join a remote-first environment where engineers have ownership and influence from discovery through deployment.
At EPI, we embrace a remote-first culture, enabling our teams to work remotely from the country they are based in, with in-person meetings at least once a quarter to foster collaboration and connection.
🐝 About the team
You’ll join the Disputes team, a small cross-functional team working across the entire product lifecycle, from ideation and discovery to deployment and operational support. You’ll report to Daniel R, Engineering Manager, and work closely with Andrea Ngo, Product Manager, and engineers Si, Oktay and David.
The Disputes team welcomes people who want to influence product decisions. Engineers can choose a roadmap topic to own and lead, challenge existing approaches, present ideas and implement solutions.
💥 Your impact
Own and deliver backend features end to end, from API design and implementation to deployment, monitoring and operational support.
Lead the architecture and evolution of EPI’s cloud-based microservices, ensuring scalability, performance, security and alignment with mobile and business needs.
Define and uphold high code quality standards, applying best practices for maintainable and testable services.
Support frontend engineers with backend expertise, guidance on API usage, data contracts and performance considerations.
Drive backend platform decisions with a clear understanding of current product requirements and future growth.
Balance platform consistency with web-specific needs, making pragmatic technical trade-offs.
Improve backend reliability, developer experience and delivery speed for mobile and platform teams.
Collaborate with product management, design, frontend, QA and other backend teams to ensure aligned and efficient delivery.

Mandatory company must-have
7+ years of professional experience in software development, including at least 5 years of backend development.
A degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field is preferred.
Fluent in English (CEFR C1 or C2); French, German, Dutch or other European languages are a plus.
Thrive in a remote-first, multicultural environment.
Job specific requirements
Proven experience building scalable system architectures, using modern design patterns and REST API design, with a commitment to clear technical documentation.
Ability to recognise and implement effective automated tests at appropriate levels.
Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of features, with the ability to collaborate across teams with minimal guidance.
Experience with frontend technologies and willingness to contribute to frontend tasks would be a plus.
Experience designing and implementing Backend-for-Frontend services, or familiarity with frontend concerns such as API contracts, performance and client-specific requirements, would be a plus.
🪜 If this looks like you, the recruitment steps are:
A first call with one of our recruiters
A technical interview focused on the role and your backend engineering expertise
A technical assessment or business case
A final interview with the hiring manager and relevant team members
Hopefully, an offer you can’t refuse
⛔ Turn back if …
You’re looking for an already highly structured environment with no ambiguity.
You don’t want to take ownership beyond writing code or supporting features after release.
You’re not interested in collaborating closely with product, frontend, QA and other engineering teams.
